Research for before and after

I started to look at images of dirty and clean things. I really like the book cover designed by Paul Rand so i decided to use my plate and cutlery for my before and after brief.

The Plinth Project

You have been chosen to participate in 'One And Another. working in groups you are to put together ideas for the time you would spend on the Plinth. As a group you will need to map out the space and size of the Plinth. The dimensions are 1.7m x 4.5m.

The Idea the group chose was to make a lego sculpture, this would bring people together by taking part but also bring colour into an area which is dull and boring. The lego will not be sculpted into anything specific it should take its own form.

Critical Research

Vince Frost began his career in Graphic Design in 1989. This was the decade of colour and style, especially citric colours. Big glasses were considered a craze and music included bands like A-ha, Erasure, Depeche Mode, the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. During every decade there is always an issue through politics. From 1985 until 1989 many issues arouse. Severe winter in Europe kills over a hundred people. The live Aid Rock Concert founded by Bob Geldof in London and Philidelphia raised over 6 million for African relief. In 1986 a reactor blew up Chenobyl power station and is known as the worlds worst nuclear accident in history. Nasa’s turmoil was felt all around the world when the space shuttle challenger blew up just after take off killing everyone on board. In 1989 thousands of pro-democracy students protest in Tiananmen Square, Peking, and the government forced martial law and used tanks to remove the students from the square. Thousands of students were killed. As a Designer issues that arise through politics, fashion, music, and TV programmes become influential to how they design certain things. Vince Frost was clearly influenced by colour in some of his work depending on the appropriateness to what has been asked of him.

Age Concern

A survey has shown that 1.7 million single older men could be living isolated from society in the UK. 400,000 of these are 75 or older. 289.000 are living in poverty. On the 30th November 2008 it is speak to your dad day, sponsored by Age Concern. These are quick ideas to advertise ''Speak to your dad day" These still need developing further to get the attention these posters require.

My original idea was to concentrate on the 70% dealing with people in design. I wanted to show this as a poster with people shaking hands. I then decided to try a single hand with extended fingers i researched designers that had done something similar. I found a design by Paul Rand which gave me an idea on how to do this effectively and also include the type in a subtle way in order for it to work well with the image.

I downloaded my typeface then produced A3 Specimen sheets for each typeface. This poster by Josef Muller Brockmann shown me how interesting type can be used when using a different layout compared to the layouts I usually use.

Typeface specimen sheet (spider)

I downloaded my typeface then produced A3 Specimen sheets for each typeface. Armin Hofmann uses a really interesting swirl in this poster. I named this typeface spider because it reminded me of spiders bulbous bodies. The poster gave me the idea of using a spiders web alongside my typeface to create my specimen sheet.

Cake Baking

you will reveal your cake, explain what kind of cake it is and relate things from your diary about the whole experience. you can present this information in any format you wish. Each cake will be tasted and it will be decided which is the best combination of presentation and cake.

Identity part 2

For the second part of the Identity brief I was to select 1 final location and 1 final event and use imagery to advertise it. I chose France and Creamfields. My final piece was done on illustrator.
